Quarnford
The ghost who left no footprints
Vist Royal Cottage in Quarnford to see where a ghost was seen and heard in a
snowstorm during the 1950s. The author Doug Pickford’s father saw the ghost when
he was driving a travelling shop van. These vans visited the lonely farms and
houses in the Staffordshire moorlands and often served as a local bus service
too. One afternoon in a snowstorm he saw an old lady trudging past Royal Cottage.
‘Do you want a lift?’ ‘Yes please,’ she replied and walked around the back of
the van to get into the passenger seat. He waited and waited and, thinking she
had fallen, he got out. But there was no one to be seen – only the footsteps
which came to an abrupt end by the van door. Even though he searched around he
never saw her again!
