Dragon-slaying St Margaret
The ancient church at Wormhill is dedicated to dragon-slaying St Margaret. Wormhill
may be named after the home of the slain dragon or serpent which once ravaged
the surrounding countryside. In folklore, burial mounds and barrows were home
to spirits of the dead, and contained treasure guarded by fearsome serpents.
Dragons and serpents survive in place names and folklore throughout the region.
Knothill close by is said to have been the home of the monster.
