'Celebrating the Peak District Landscapes’

Landscape Interpretation Plans for the Peak District

(published in December 2004)

This report was commissioned by the Peak District Interpretation Partnership and the Moors for the Future Partnership. In it we:

  • Explain the concept of ‘landscape interpretation’
  • Present a set of criteria which can be used when deciding between possible landscape interpretation projects, or when allocating resources
  • Identify what it is that is special about the four Peak District landscape character areas. These ‘statements of significance’ provide an overarching summary of what in the landscape could be interpreted to both visitors and residents
  • Distil each statement of significance into a number of area-wide themes for interpretation, with examples of how these can be then used in site based interpretive provision
  • Summarise available information about the people who live in or visit the different landscape areas, and current interpretive provision
  • Recommend a number of options for interpretive work in the future.  The next step will be to identify organisations (and funding) to take these ideas forward, to work the ideas up into project action plans, and then to implement these projects on the ground.

The Peak District Interpretation Strategy

Guidance for organisations and individuals who interpret the Peak District
(Published in 2001)

The interpretation strategy sets out goals for interpretation in the Peak District and presents the ‘Peak District Story’ in a number of different ways.  Appendices offer those new to interpretation guidance through a number of ‘Good Practice Principles’, advice on Interpretive plans and planning, notes on the advantages and drawbacks of different interpretive media and a list of useful contacts and books.
