Follow the life and death story of the red grouse on the National Trust's High Peak moorlands.

Between May and October 2008 we will be bringing you 6 monthly episodes in the soap opera of the Peak District moorlands' most iconic bird.

We will follow the bird from brooding hens nesting with their eggs in spring to young birds facing winter taking in the shooting season that begins on the 12th August. Interviews with National Trust staff, tenants and gamekeepers will open up the world of moorland management that maintains healthy populations of red grouse.

Every year thousands of young red grouse are born on the Peak District moorlands, the most southern part of their range. The red grouse stays on the moors all year round. Its distinctive call and flight are a distinctive part of the moorlands. The National Trust manages the moors for the grouse, promoting the growth of heather and revegetating eroded peat. There is a short article about Geoff Eyre, our interviewee in episode 4, in the Guardian on the 9th April.

The series is produced by Peak Experience in partnership with the National Trust.
